Allan Stevenson: biography

Allan Stevenson is the owner and director of Luffness Mains, a leading arable farming business in East Lothian that specialises in high quality pre-pack potatoes for the supermarket, Tesco. He was born and brought up at Luffness, leaving to earn a business degree from the University of Edinburgh and pursue a successful career in commerce before returning to his roots. Luffness Mains is now a LEAF Marque accredited farm and in 2007 was named the Tesco/Greenvale Scottish Potato Grower of the year.

A qualified chartered accountant, Allan runs his own business consultancy and has held various directorships with engineering, manufacturing and food service companies. He was Group Finance Director at EC Harris, a global consultancy in real estate capital projects, and remains Chairman of the EC Harris Group Pension Scheme. Until recently, he was a Non-Executive Director at Cobra UK (Holdings), a satellite and home automation technologies company, and at DEGW plc, a global workspace design consultancy.

Allan is currently Chair of the Potato Council, which works to make the British potato industry more competitive in home and global markets. He’s also a board member of the Potato Council’s overseeing body, the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB). He recently became chairman of Borderfields, a unique company making top-quality Cold Pressed Rapeseed Oil from crops grown in Northumberland and the Scottish Borders. Additionally, Allan chairs the Audit Committee at the Scottish Crop Research Institute (SCRI) where he’s also a member of the Governing Board. He’s a Non-Executive Director at RSABI (formerly the Royal Scottish Agricultural Benevolent Institution).
