What we grow

Luffness Mains farms over 1500 acres of land in the East Lothian area. Our principal crop is the potato and we grow nine varieties and supply our customers both in season and out of season from cold store. We are able to supply our customers throughout the year.

We actually harvest the seasonal crop day to day to meet demand, but out of season potatoes are all harvested in September and October and kept in cold stores for up to nine months.

    Seasonal (June to November)

  1. Maris Peer (from July)
  2. Vales Emerald (1st early from June)
  3. Marfona (from August)
  4. Estima (from August)
  5. Maris Piper (from August)
  6. Desiree (from August)
  7. King Edwards (from August)
  8. Vales Sovereign (August)

Out of Season (December to June)

  1. Estima
  2. Maris Piper
  3. Maris Peer
  4. Desiree
  5. King Edwards

Unusually, we can also supply early varieties of potato from June, due to our gentle coastal climate. We have grown potatoes at the farm since 1914, when grandfather Allan Stevenson came from Girvan in Ayrshire where his family had grown them since the 19th Century.

Our main potato customer is Greenvale AP which prepares and packs quality fresh potatoes for major retailers including Tesco. Luffness Mains holds a Gold Award for the Tesco 'Natures Choice' accreditation, which is the highest grade of achievement within this scheme.

We also have achieved 'LEAF Marque' accreditation, the highest standard in the UK for the practice of Integrated Farming.

In addition to potatoes, Luffness Mains grows winter and spring wheat, which is mostly grown for bread making and biscuit flours as well as some feed wheat for other markets. We have Scottish Quality Cereals Scheme accreditation for our cereal production.

We act as a 1st tier supplier for turf production on several farms in the local area, which our customer, Stewarts supplies mainly to the property development market and retailers.

Our crop rotation and soil fertility on most of the farm suits the growing of vegetable crops too.

We are keen to find other opportunities; bio fuels may tempt us to find new markets with existing crops in future, but we are open to fresh ideas for new commercial crop production newideas@luffnessmains.com
