East Lothian offers an abundance of attractions and activities for visitors to the area. We have selected a few of our favourite recommendations below.
East Lothian is renowned for its world-class golf courses, including;
Archerfield, Gullane, Kilspindie, Luffness, Muirfield, Renaissance and many more.
There are many lovely walking routes in East Lothian to suit a range of activity levels. The famous John Muir Way stretches across the county; hugging the coastline and providing walkers with a unique journey through the Scottish countryside. Aberlady Bay Local Nature Reserve, a renowned bird watcher’s paradise, is only a short distance from our home. East Lothian is also home to a dramatic coastline, boasting beautiful beaches – ideal for walking, running or even swimming (not for the faint hearted!). If you are looking for something slightly less strenuous, we highly recommend a walk around the Gosford Estate, which features a stunning mansion, lakes and expansive grounds to explore.
Nearby towns and villages
East Lothian’s proximity to Edinburgh offers guests the best of both worlds; explore Scotland’s historic and vibrant capital city (a short 20-minute train journey from Drem, our local station), then recharge your batteries while visiting some of the quiet and picturesque villages and towns in the countryside. The popular seaside town of North Berwick is a must; packed with lovely shops, trendy coffee nooks and tourist attractions. The pretty village of Dirleton is also well worth a visit, it is home to Dirleton Castle and Gardens, which feature the world’s longest herbaceous border.
Day trips and family excursions
If you are looking for a fun-filled day out to entertain the whole family, look no further than the Restoration Yard at Dalkeith Country Park (12 miles away). These beautifully restored 18th century stables have been transformed into an extensive and luxurious shopping space, restaurant, coffee bar and wellness lab. Adults can stroll around the grounds and children can delight in the sky maze of Fort Douglas – a captivating series of tree houses and outdoor play zones! We also highly recommend our guests visit Archerfield Walled Garden, which will delight children with its enchanting woodland fairy trail and outdoor play area, while adults can sit back and enjoy the micro-brewery, cafe, gift shop and delicatessen. If you are looking for something more educational, the National Museum of Flight, home to Concorde, offers a fascinating half-day activity, as does the Myreton Motor Museum – a mere 5-minute walk from our home.
When it comes to lovely pubs and restaurants, East Lothian is spoilt for choice!
